Trip to Lamboréné

transpixel Alfred Schweitzer is a famous humanitarian who founded a hospital in Lamboréné.  Before leaving, we visited the hospital and saw where he was buried on the grounds. transpixel

transpixel Schweitzer was fond of pellicans, so several are kept on the hospital grounds. transpixel

transpixel This snake appeared on the road as we were returning from Lamboréné.  Gabonese generally hate snakes and take every chance they can to kill them.  At this point, Herve had driven our car over the snake several times, yet the snake was apparently unharmed. transpixel

transpixel These are the only monkeys I saw close-up.  They were caged in a private zoo owned by a resort hotel that catered to tourists.

I didn't like the hotel or the private zoo.  The animals were treated badly, and were clearly unhappy.  I had to grin and bear it, though, because Herve and Regis were very excited to take me to see these animals. transpixel
